Project: Vis-Ethiopia “Davide, ángel del agua”
What do we want to do?
We would like to build a well of drinking water in Ethiopia.
Why do we want to do it?
We would like to do a project in the memory of Davide, our angel. We will guide the force of his life in a direction, with a specific goal. In this case the goal will be to give water, a vital element in life, to a town in a desert region of the earth. Water is life, precious and essential. We would like to remember Davide like this.
How are we going to do this?
Through an NGO: “VIS Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo”
Why with VIS and Why in Ethiopia?
Because Susanna, Davide´s mother, has worked at VIS in Sri Lanka 2005-2006 in the post Tsunami reconstruction.
Vis Ethiopia because Our friends Giovanna and Axel work there, who know the reality of this country. In Ethiopia just 22% of the population has access to some level of drinkable water springs but in the rural area this percentage goes down to 11%; just 4 out of every 100 have access to appropriate medical care. Some regions of Ethiopia were affected by civil wars in the last twenty years; the latest war between Ethiopia and Eritrea ended in 2000 and generated an economical and social crisis, in terms of destruction of physical infrastructures as the extreme poverty of the population. The frequent and recurrent periods of drought has resulted in low fertility of the ground and its use is not sustainable. This has resulted in a fall in the productivity in the agriculture sector, this has generated a chronic situation of insecurity in the alimentary part. There are regions which are more arid and with difficulties to access inhabited by the agreicultural community. Because rain is scarce and irregular there is a large risk to the harvests. The intestinal infections are very common in this area and this affect especially babies because the population utilize water’s spring not safe (especially from stagnant water).
When are we going to do it?
When we get enough Money to start implementing the work.
How much does it cost?
Depends from the typology of the intervention. For example:
- Tank (collection of water from rain): 11.000 euros:
In this Picture you can see a part of the system where the rain’s water converges into; the tank (the circular part) and the filter (the square part, lower left of the image. You can not see the taps which are further down the valley.
- Well dug by hand: 5.000 euros. Hand water pump of 20-30 meters.
- Well dug by a drill with medium profundity: 11.000 euros. Hand water pump of 35-60 meters.
As you can see, this well could have been dug with a drill (35-60 meters), or by hand. The pump system is the same.
· Well dug with a drill with a profundity of 100-180 meters: 55.000 euros. Electric pump with a generator and pipe system.
In this picture you can see the tank and the distribution system, You can not see the part with the generator diesel that give energy to the pump.
